Police reported that at 2:40 a.m. on August 24, a Ford Mustang GT driven at high speed missed a left-hand curve at a Newtown intersection and struck a tree—killing 19-year-old Danbury resident Mary Cordero while injuring four others, two critically, who were taken to Danbury Hospital.

Danbury-area schools will start the 2025-26 academic year as students and new staff return; the new Danbury High School West campus will welcome its first students this month and several districts are introducing changes like campus renovations and updated learning plans—efforts aimed at boosting student success.
