COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Danbury Railway Museum will host the Husking Bee Pumpkin Patch Train with a 20 minute round-trip ride on a vintage 1920s passenger coach that stops at a pumpkin patch for a free pumpkin, apple cider, and cookies—trains depart from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on October 11—12, 18—19, and 25—26, and a special Saturday Twilight Train leaves at 6:30 p.m., while kids under two ride free and reservations are recommended.  Tribuna
  • The Elmwood Hall Danbury Senior Center is launching fall programs for seniors, including a free Know Your Numbers screening with RVNA and YMCA on October 17th and an arthritis talk by Dr. Daniel Howard on October 22nd. Additional offerings include the returning Memories to Memoir class from October 20th and daily Broadway Burn exercise sessions at 10 Elmwood Place—membership is free for seniors.  Tribuna

CULTURE NEWS

  • The New American Dream Foundation hosted its 11th Annual American Dream Awards Gala on September 26 at the Amber Room Colonnade with over 300 guests—honoring Connecticut Attorney General William Tong with a Lifetime Achievement Award and presenting honors to scholarship winners and community programs like Cora’s Kids and local leader Doug Polistena. The event raised $15,000 for Mission Health Day and featured a Chinese Lion Dance and drum performance that celebrated unity and inclusion in the community.  Tribuna

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Lamont urged high school seniors to keep their grades high because the new Connecticut Automatic Admission Program will automatically admit students meeting the GPA requirements to 10 colleges—this program waives fees and extra materials and has an application period open until May 1. The program is administered by Connecticut State Colleges and Universities with Common App to simplify college enrollment for eligible students.  Tribuna
  • The Children’s Leadership Training Institute in Danbury held a twenty‐week program where children between four and thirteen learned about diversity, community, and government roles in interactive lessons led by local leaders including Mayor Roberto Alves. Students completed a community project—donating food, books, and bottle deposit funds to Daily Bread Food Pantry—to practice using their voices and ideas for local change.  Tribuna
  • Danbury Public Schools will host Family University on Saturday, October 18 at 8:30 a.m. with workshops, taste tests, cooking and gardening classes—this event celebrates Farm to School Month while CT Grown for CT Kids week runs from October 4 through 11 and parent-teacher conferences are coming next month. On a Sunday morning at a youth football game, local coaches removed players from view after adults displayed unsportsmanlike behavior that disrupted the game environment.  Tribuna

  • AARP Connecticut is distributing free caregiving resource kits in honor of November's National Family Caregivers Month to support more than 420,000 unpaid family caregivers—kits that include guides on caregiving and financial planning will be available at local libraries, senior centers and community centers. This initiative targets the everyday challenges faced by family caregivers in the state.  Tribuna

  • The CIAC girls volleyball midseason report detailed top teams across several conferences—East Lyme has not dropped a set in the ECC and Greenwich is 9-0 in Class LL—while surprise teams like Naugatuck posted a 12-0 start and standout players helped shape early success; coaches now prepare for a challenging second half as teams aim to build on these results.
