COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This August, the Danbury Library will offer free family events that include art workshops, academic support for rising 6th graders, live comedy and sports talks, and creative projects for all ages—space may be limited for some programs.  Tribuna
  • The Union Savings Bank Foundation awarded $560,000 in grants at a check presentation at the Amber Room in Danbury, supporting 61 local nonprofits and food pantries. More than 100 community partners and USB staff attended the ceremony—helping to continue the bank's long commitment to local support.  Tribuna
  • Parent leaders graduated from a 20-week PLTI program where they learned tools to start community projects. Graduates like Veronica Cervantes formed the Danbury Mexican Cultural Center in July 2024 and planned events such as a Cinco de Mayo celebration—demonstrating how training can drive local cultural change.  Tribuna
  • Friends of Tarrywile Park completed projects such as installing new birdhouses, repairing a bridge, updating trash cans, and planting a butterfly garden, mostly funded by community donations and a $63,026 state grant from DEEP—efforts that keep the park safe and attractive. The group will soon convert the historic Milking Parlor into a new Volunteer Center to support park events and volunteer activities.  Tribuna
  • Elmwood Hall Danbury Senior Center at 10 Elmwood Place offers daily exercise, art and dance classes plus special events—food truck Tuesdays and Medicare workshops held from mid-August through early October—with free membership for seniors 60+.  Tribuna

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The state Department of Transportation reported that 6 biking and e-biking deaths happened by the end of July, up from 1 last year — officials warned that deaths may reach double digits this year and that stricter helmet laws for those under 18 will take effect on Oct. 1.  News 12 Connecticut

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Connecticut rolled back electric vehicle rebates on Aug. 1, causing EV prices to jump $1,000 as buyers rush to buy before federal tax credits expire next month—Leo Karl III of Karl Chevrolet in New Canaan noted an unprecedented surge in demand. The state's low-income program remains unchanged while officials will re-evaluate standard incentives this fall.  News 12 Connecticut

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Danbury experiences hot, humid weather during the dog days of summer as families work to register children by August 8 to start school on August 26 for grades 1-12 and on August 29 for kindergarten—local events also include the Saturday Farmers Market at Center City and the Danbury WORKS Party on the Patio on August 14 at 375 Main Street. This period offers many local educational and community activities as the city prepares for the new school year.  Tribuna

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal cuts to SNAP under H.R.1 will lower benefits for Connecticut residents as the state pays 75% of administrative fees adding an extra cost of $77 million—forcing stricter eligibility and work requirements. Social Services Commissioner Andrea Barton Reeves said that some seniors may receive as low as $65 a month—while the department now fields 4,000 calls a day.  Tribuna
