ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Ridgefield resident Brandon Gmelin, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate, died Wednesday in South Salem, New York when a log splitter began rolling down a slope during landscaping work—first responders pronounced him dead at the scene.  The Ridgefield Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Connecticut Department of Labor report shows that total jobs reached 1.7 million—the highest since March 2008—with increases in seven industry sectors and a gain of 1,000 jobs in the Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury area. The report also noted that the labor force fell by 3,700 in June and unemployment held at 3.8 while manufacturing still has about 5,000 open positions.  WTNH-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials from DEEP said coyotes are more visible this time of year and warned Danbury pet owners to keep pets indoors or on a leash. Recent incidents in Watertown, where a 13-year-old and their father were bitten after feeding a coyote, and in Westport, where a coyote lunged at a dog, underscore the risk of close encounters with these wild animals—residents are urged to exercise caution.  News 12 Connecticut
  • Connecticut state parks and beaches were closed to swimmers after tests on Tuesday and Wednesday found high bacteria levels, DEEP said — West Beach at Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme, Gardner Lake State Park in Salem and Lake Waramaug State Park in Kent were shut down. A retest will be scheduled when possible and Sandy Beach at Crystal Lake in Ellington was closed due to environmental concerns.  The Ridgefield Press

  • Eight people won $1 million or more on Thursday, July 17 when National Lottery Day saw big wins across Connecticut; a Danbury winner earned $2 million from a ticket sold at J&R White Street Citgo and two others received life annuity prizes (winners purchased tickets at various locations statewide).  WTNH-TV

  • Families and caregivers of loved ones with dementia are warned to take extra steps to prevent wandering as high heat continues, following Governor Lamont's activation of an Extreme Hot Weather Protocol and guidance from experts who advise using door alarms and room cameras—tools that help keep at-risk individuals safe.  WTNH-TV
