Good morning, Danbury. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 28th of June.
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A federal report shows that 2,100 miles of Connecticut roads are in poor condition — placing the state among those with the worst roads in the nation. Experts caution that the study uses self-reported data by the state — and note that highway fatalities have dropped nearly 30% since last year. WTNH-TV
- ➤ Immigration rights advocates reported that ICE increased its arrests in Connecticut as masked agents in a gray car stopped an immigrant handing him a know-your-rights flier outside Danbury Superior Court, with multiple arrests noted in recent weeks. Local officials and the Trust Act leave authorities largely in the dark—many immigrants now fear attending court or check-ins. The Ridgefield Press
- ➤ A state audit found that the Department of Children and Families did not give enough help to six teenage girls who ran away and later faced risks like sex trafficking or getting in trouble with the law — the review recorded 3,736 incidents from 2021 to 2023. DCF said it does not agree with the audit and has started new policies while state lawmakers urged quick fixes to prevent more dangerous gaps in care — officials called the results very troubling. - ➤ Connecticut law bans nearly all fireworks for non-professionals—only sparklers and fountains are legal for those over 16—and violators face fines or jail, while a new law will allow non-explosive consumer fireworks and sky lanterns for adults 18 or older starting Oct. 1. WTNH-TV
- ➤ Connecticut State Colleges and Universities named Dr. John Maduko interim president after audits showed chancellor Terrence Cheng spent lavishly on his state credit card—Cheng will stay on as a consultant for another year at his full salary. News 12 Connecticut
